At NDPS we use the Better Buddies program to assist us in creating a friendly and caring school environment. Better Buddies was created by the Alannah and Madeline Foundation and ties in beautifully with our school values as the program is guided by the values of respect and responsibility, along with caring for others, friendliness and inclusion.
At NDPS, Better Buddies is implemented across the lower and upper classes, assisting younger students in their transition to primary school by providing them with extra support, and helping all students widen their friendship circle by developing cross age relationships.
Students in the junior class are paired with an older student from the senior class, who are trained with necessary skills to teach and practice the values of Better Buddies.
At the beginning of the school year, prep students are presented with a ‘Buddy Bear’, a mascot for Better Buddies, from their older buddy.
Buddy classes come together throughout the school year for a range of purposes, including relationship building exercises, with a firm favourite being pancake day!
At NDPS we also have two Buddy bear benches. If students feel lonely or can’t find anyone to play with, they can go and sit on one of the benches. This action lets to other students know how they are feeling and teaches them to recognise when someone else is feeling down or left out and encourages them to act in a supportive way by inviting them to join in.
